The Lion King is a 1994 American animated musical drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 32nd Disney animated feature film and the fifth produced during the Disney Renaissance. The film is inspired by William Shakespeare's stage play Hamlet with some elements from the Biblical stories of Joseph and Moses and Disney's 1942 animated feature film Bambi.

The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young lion who is the crown prince of the Pride Lands. However, his ambitious uncle Scar murders Simba's father, Mufasa, and takes over the throne. Simba is tricked into believing that he is responsible for Mufasa's death and flees into exile. With the help of his two new friends, Timon and Pumbaa, Simba learns to live a carefree life without responsibility. However, when Simba's childhood friend Nala finds him and tells him about the Pride Lands under Scar's tyrannical rule, Simba realizes that he must return home and reclaim his rightful place as king.

The Lion King was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $763 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time at the time. It won two Academy Awards, for Best Original Song ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight") and Best Original Score, and was nominated for Best Picture. The film has been praised for its animation, music, story, and themes.
